Accessibility statement

We’re committed to making this website fully accessible so it can be used by as many people as possible. This statement explains:

  • the steps we have taken towards being accessibility compliant
  • how we test our website
  • our current accessibility ratings.

Accessible features on this website

We have put accessibility features in place that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts using your browser or other tools
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate to content and navigation using ‘skip links’
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard, including contact forms
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software

The content on this website has been written in Plain English wherever possible so it is easy to understand.

The latest Silktide report shows this website has a reading age of 11 and a half years old.

What needs more work

This website went live on 26 May 2021. An in-depth review of the site highlighted the following issues:

  • Hotjar feedback plugin is not fully accessible, with issues such as contrast errors, empty buttons and missing form labels. If you are unable to use the HotJar feedback plugin and would like to feedback on this website, please email web@eastriding.gov.uk
  • The website has only 1 PDF file, a carer's newsletter, which is not fully accessible.

How we test this website

Silktide

Each time we release new content and/or functionality on this website, we run an manual accessibility test using the Silktide accessibility testing platform. This checks the content of this website against the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards using automated testing techniques. Any highlighted issues are corrected as soon as possible to make sure our high compliance score is maintained.

Silktide also carries out an automated weekly check of this website and alerts us of anything we need to resolve.

Compliance status

The latest manual Silktide report, run on 7 July 2022, stated this website had achieved:

  • Level A - 90% compliance
  • Level AA - 89% compliance
  • Level AAA - 89% compliance

We are taking steps to make sure the PDF is formatted correctly to gain full compliance.

WAVE

We also carry out regular manual checks using the WAVE web accessibility evaluation tool. This provides visual feedback about the accessibility of web content by injecting icons and indicators into the page. You can find out more about the WAVE tool on the WEBAIM website.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

Since the launch of this website in May 2021, we have put a number of procedures in place to make sure this website remains accessible. These include:

  • a dedicated website administrator tasked to identify and address accessibility issues in response to user feedback and Silktide reports
  • an ongoing training programme for designers, developers, website contributors and moderators on how to deliver accessible web pages from the ground-up.

We are also investigating ways to test, and gain feedback on, our website with real users from across East Riding of Yorkshire.
