Planning for an emergency
If you are aged 18 or over and are responsible for caring for someone who lives with you, it is important to consider what would happen if you are caught up in an emergency and unable to carry out your care duties. You can do this by creating an emergency cover plan so you know the person you care for would be kept safe if a situation occurs. You should also carry a carer’s emergency contact card.
Emergency cover plan
Once you have had your carer's assessment, a member of staff from community services will help you to create an emergency cover plan. This includes the following information:
- details of the person you care for
- the things you do to help them
- names of family or friends who can help care for them in an emergency situation.
The member of staff will also carry out any required risk assessments to make sure our emergency team are aware of any potential risks, such as a dog, when they are entering your home without you there.
The emergency cover plan is kept on record by our community services team. The emergency contact details will be passed to our lifeline service (this is a free service - you do not need to subscribe to lifeline).
Updating your personal details
If you need to update any of the details on your cover plan, such as your address or details of emergency contacts, please contact the Community Support Team.
Emergency contact card
There is a 24-hour telephone number on the card that connects to one of our lifeline operators (you do not need to be subscribed to the lifeline service). The operator will alert your emergency contacts and inform them that the person you care for is on their own or may need their support.
If none of your contacts are available, then as a backup option, the emergency cover team would be contacted to make sure the person you provide care for is kept safe. We can only support cared for people, so please make sure you make alternative arrangements for any children aged 15 or under.
Please note: the community support team can provide up to 48 hours emergency care cover (72 hours over a bank holiday). If you are unable to resume your carer duties after this time, the adult social care team will arrange respite cover.
Replacement cards
If your carer's emergency contact card has been lost, stolen or is damaged, please Carer’s Support Service to let us know and request a replacement card.
Please note: your existing card will be cancelled and you will be issued with a new card and card number.

If you have a carer's emergency contact card, you'll get free entry to the following leisure attractions when you are accompanying the person you care for:
Sewerby Hall and Gardens
Situated on Sewerby cliff tops with spectacular views over Bridlington, Sewerby Hall and Gardens offers something for everyone:
- Grade 1 listed hall
- award winning gardens
- Sewerby Zoo, featuring domestic and wild animals, such as pygmy goats from Africa and llamas from South America
- 50 acres of early 19th Century parkland.

Located in Pocklington, Burnby Hall Gardens and Museum is a great place to visit for a day out. Features include:
- 8 acres of gardens that are home to a national collection of over 80 varieties of hardy water lily
- The Stewart Museum that houses a fascinating collection of artefacts gathered by Major Stewart on 8 world tours between 1906 and 1926
- children's playground
- the Lilypad cafe with afternoon teas and freshly ground coffee.
