If you are getting older, and/or have a care need, but want to stay independent and continue living in your own home, you may be able to with some specialist equipment or adjustments to your home.
Here are some things for you to consider:
These offer simple solutions to everyday tasks, such as switching your manual can opener to an electric one, or talking kitchen scales for people who are blind or visually impaired. They are devices or gadgets aimed at making it easier for you to continue carrying out everyday tasks on your own. Learn more about living aids and equipment.
Some of the equipment you need to help you maintain your independence is likely to need installing within your home. For example, if you need grab rail to get out of the bath, you’ll need someone to fit them for you. This is what is known as ‘minor adaptations’ to your home. Find out more about minor adaptations.
If you are physically disabled, and especially if you are a wheelchair user, you may need to get equipment and have permanent fixtures installed at home so that you can live there independently.
