Travelling by train

Here is some information about train travel in East Riding, including discount schemes you may qualify for.

Local train services

There are 4 train operators that offer train services to and from the East Riding:

Free travel passes

National Senior Railcard

If you are aged 60 or over, you can purchase a senior railcard. This gives you a third off all standard, first class anytime, off-peak and advance rail fares. You can purchase either a 1 year or 3 year railcard.

Find out more and apply on the National Rail Senior Railcard website.

Discount for East Riding residents

If you live in the East Riding of Yorkshire you can apply for a discount code that gives you 20 per cent off the cost of a senior railcard. You can apply for this discount code on the East Riding of Yorkshire Council website.

Free local train travel for disabled people

A disabled person’s local travel pass offers free local travel on trains (and buses). You can apply if you are an East Riding resident and you are:

  • blind
  • profoundly or severely deaf
  • limbless
  • disabled with a severe learning disability.

Find out more about the disabled person’s local travel pass on the East Riding of Yorkshire Council website.

Passenger Assist

If you are disabled and/or an older person you can book the Passenger Assist service.

This national service is available throughout the rail network.

Before you travel they can:

  • arrange assistance for your full journey - even if part of it is with another service provider
  • reserve wheelchair spaces and seats
  • provide you with detailed rail information

While on your journey they can also help you:

  • to navigate through each station on your journey
  • to get on and off the trains - and provide a ramp where required
  • with your bags, for example they can carry them off the train and to another train, or through the station
  • with any animals travelling with you.

You can find out more about Passenger Assist and how to book on the National Rail website.
